It seems that Apple’s recent update to iBooks (1.2.1) has the ability to detect whether or not your device is jailbroken. The result is the above message when you try to open content in the app:
“There is a problem with the configuration of your iPhone. Please restore with iTunes and reinstall iBooks.”
Jailbreak developer Comex did some investigating and found how iBooks is doing this. The DRM protection on an eBook purchased from iBooks attempts to run unsigned binaries to check to see if the device is jailbroken. If successfully, it detects that it is in fact jailbroken and gives you the message above.
Naturally many jailbreakers are upset at Apple’s decision to do this seeing how jailbreaking is legal.
It will be interesting to see if other app developers start doing more advanced security methods or if this pertains to only Apple apps.
At least its just iBooks and not the Phone app.
